6. Sustainability
That sustainability has changed something you actually did — a quantity, a material, a decision to reuse rather than replace — and that you can talk about the whole life of the structure rather than only its construction.

Institution of Structural Engineers
- This objective is intended to demonstrate experience in applying structural engineering in a way that minimises (and ultimately, reverses) negative environmental impacts whilst maximising societal benefit.
- Minimum standard, Incorporated-Member: E — Experience. The subject should be performed independently or under supervision.

What strong and weak evidence look like
Worth doing
- A quantity you reduced, with the design decision that reduced it.
- An embodied carbon comparison you carried out, with the assumptions that mattered.
- Reuse or retention of an existing structure, and the assessment that made it defensible.
- A whole-life argument you made, whether it won or lost.
- An honest account of where a project made things worse.
Avoid
- The project's sustainability strategy, offered as your evidence.
- Listing UN Sustainable Development Goals with no decision attached.
- A carbon saving claimed with no idea of the baseline.
- Sustainability described entirely as site waste recycling.

If the answer is nothing, the evidence is not there yet — and it is better to find that out early.
Where is the carbon in what I designed?
Reviewers often start here. Not knowing suggests the analysis was somebody else's.
What did my project make worse?
The objective is honest about negative impacts. Candidates who only claim benefit sound unconsidered.

How reviewers tend to approach this objective
- Asking what you personally changed, not what the project claimed.
- Asking where the carbon actually sits in your structure.
- Asking how you would argue a low-carbon option against a cost target.
- Asking about the difference between embodied and operational carbon.
