Institution of Structural Engineers
- This objective is intended to demonstrate a candidate's experience of the practical process to convert design work into completed structures and should demonstrate that they are able to contribute to this in a meaningful way.
- Minimum standard, Incorporated-Member: E — Experience. The subject should be performed independently or under supervision.
- Minimum standard, Chartered Member: E — Experience. The subject should be performed independently or under supervision.

What strong and weak evidence look like
Worth doing
- A design change you made because of how it would be built.
- A temporary condition you identified that governed the permanent design.
- A site problem you were called to and resolved, with what you decided.
- A construction sequence you thought through, including the stage that was most vulnerable.
- Evidence of tolerance, setting out or fit being designed for rather than discovered.
Avoid
- Site visits with photographs, and no decision attached.
- "I attended site meetings."
- A design with no evidence that anyone considered how it would be erected.
- Treating buildability as the contractor's problem.

Questions to ask yourself
What is the worst stage during construction?
The temporary condition governs far more often than candidates expect.
What did I change because of how it would be built?
That change is the evidence. Awareness of buildability is not.
Have I been on site for my own design?
It is the single most common gap in an otherwise strong design-office portfolio.

How reviewers tend to approach this objective
- Asking how your structure was erected, stage by stage.
- Asking what the crane could and could not reach.
- Asking what went wrong on site and what you did.
- Asking about tolerances and what happens when they accumulate.
