That you understand the materials you actually build with — how they behave, how they fail, how they are made and placed, how they deteriorate — and that you can specify them properly.

Core Objective 5 — what IStructE says
Institution of Structural Engineers
- This objective is intended to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the structural materials used in the candidate's work, along with an ability to specify and coordinate the use of such materials.
- Minimum standard, Incorporated-Member: B — Ability. Perform the subject without supervision and be competent to advise others.
- Minimum standard, Chartered Member: B — Ability. Perform the subject without supervision and be competent to advise others.

What strong and weak evidence look like
Worth doing
- A specification you wrote, and the reason behind a particular clause.
- A durability or exposure decision, with what drove it.
- A material problem on site — a mix that did not perform, a weld that failed inspection — and your part in resolving it.
- A comparison between materials where the answer was not obvious.
- Evidence of coordinating a material with fabrication, delivery or placing constraints.
Avoid
- Describing the properties of materials in general. Reviewers already know them, and the guidance says so directly.
- A specification copied from the previous job with nothing of yours in it.
- Experience in one material only, with no awareness of the others.
- No account of how the material is actually made, placed or erected.

Questions to ask yourself
What did I specify, and why that rather than the default?
The objective asks for an ability to specify, not an ability to describe.
How is this material actually made and placed?
Specification without buildability produces details nobody can construct.
How will it deteriorate, and who deals with that?
Durability is where material understanding becomes an engineering decision.

How reviewers tend to approach this objective
- Asking why you specified a particular grade, class or cover.
- Asking what would go wrong if the material were substituted.
- Asking about a material you have not used, to test the breadth of your understanding.
- Asking how you would investigate a material failure.
