How to use it
The useful filter is the standard a question is pitched at, not the objective.
An objective set at Ability asks you to show you worked unsupervised and could advise others. A question pitched at that level — "whose calculations have you checked, and what did you find?" — is answered badly by describing work you did under supervision, however good the work was. Filtering by Knowledge, Experience or Ability lets you rehearse at the level each objective actually requires.
The depth filter separates three kinds of question. Openers get you talking. The middle band is where most of an interview sits. The third is the follow-up that separates candidates: "which of your concepts turned out to be wrong?", "what would you do differently?", "where are the limits of your competence?" Those are the ones worth rehearsing out loud.
Answer them properly, or do not bother
Reading a question and thinking "yes, I could answer that" is worth almost nothing. The gap between knowing something and saying it in ninety seconds, in the first person, with a project attached, is the whole difficulty of the interview.
Say the answer out loud. Time it. Better still, have someone ask you.
What these questions are not
They are not IStructE's questions. The Institution does not publish an interview question bank, and no reviewer has seen these. They are what two experienced engineers would plausibly ask when establishing whether a stated standard has been reached — which makes them good practice and useless as prediction.

Where are the limits of your technical competence, and how do you know?

The answer that loses it: Claiming no limits, or naming a limit so distant it costs nothing to admit.
When did you recognise that a problem was more complex than it first looked?

An understanding that structural failures are learned from collectively, and some act of sharing — a lessons-learned note, a CROSS report, an internal briefing.
What would you do if asked to work outside your competence, by someone senior?

The Code applied under pressure. The answer should include what you would do, not only what you would refuse.
The answer that loses it: An answer that assumes the request would never happen.
Which technical meeting or seminar has changed how you work?

Attendance turned into practice. The objective's evidence examples include a brief commentary on selected events, which is exactly this.
How would you explain a structural constraint to a client with no technical background?
Objective 2Ability
Translation without condescension, and a check that the client understood. Ability here means being competent to advise others.
When did you have to deliver unwelcome technical news, and how did you do it?
Objective 2Ability
Directness with a route forward. Reviewers are listening for someone who did not soften the engineering to make the conversation easier.
The answer that loses it: Passing the message through someone else.
How do you make sure a drawing communicates your intent to someone building it?
Objective 2Ability
Awareness that a drawing is an instruction to a person, not a record for a file — annotation, sequence, and what the contractor actually needs.
Whose written work have you reviewed, and what did you change?
Objective 2Ability
Advising others, which is the Ability standard. Reviewing someone else's report is direct evidence of it.
The answer that loses it: Only ever having been reviewed.
What was your last disagreement with another discipline, and how was it resolved?

Negotiation on engineering grounds, and a resolution that someone had to accept. Architects and building services are the usual settings.
Your portfolio is a piece of communication. What did you do to make it navigable?

That the candidate understands their submission is itself assessed under this objective — the index, the cross-referencing, the annotation.
How do you record a decision made in a meeting so that it holds up later?

Contemporaneous notes, circulation, and the discipline of writing down what was agreed rather than what was said.
What is the hardest thing you have had to explain, and to whom?

A genuine difficulty rather than a routine explanation, and an audience whose needs shaped the answer.
On a scheme you worked on, what were the options, and why did you land where you did?
Objective 3Ability
Real alternatives that were genuinely considered, and a decision the candidate owned. At Chartered level this objective is set at Ability.
The answer that loses it: Describing the scheme that was built as though it were the only possibility.
What constraint most shaped that scheme, and how did you find it?

The dominant constraint, and whether the candidate found it or was told about it. Finding it is the more valuable answer.
Which of your concepts turned out to be wrong, and when did you realise?

Self-appraisal. Reviewers weigh this heavily, and candidates avoid it because it feels like admitting weakness.
The answer that loses it: Claiming never to have been wrong.
How do you establish stability at concept stage?

That stability is settled early and explicitly rather than emerging from the analysis later.
How would you approach a structure of a type you have never designed?

A method: precedent, first principles, specialist advice, and knowing when to decline. It probes both concept design and the Code.
