Advanced structural analysis: stage assessment

Modules 16 to 18: indeterminate structures, influence lines and instability. These are the topics where the wrong assumption is most expensive, so several questions test whether a method applies at all.

This draws on the whole stage rather than one module, and several questions need two ideas combined. Work them out properly before checking — the point is to find out what you can do unaided, and a hint taken early tells you nothing.

There is no pass mark and nothing is recorded anywhere but your own browser. If a question defeats you, the module it came from is listed alongside.

  1. Question 1

A propped cantilever spans 7.00 m and carries a UDL of 18.0 kN/m. What is the prop reaction, in kN?

  2. Question 2

For that same propped cantilever, what is the fixing moment at the built-in end, in kNm?

  3. Question 3

One support of a three-span continuous beam settles by 15 mm. What happens to the bending moments?

  4. Question 4

    A pin-ended column 5.00 m long has E = 205 000 N/mm² and I = 1.20 × 10⁷ mm⁴. What is its Euler critical load, in kN?

  5. Question 5

That column also carries a first-order moment of 40.0 kNm, under an axial load of 400 kN. What is the second-order moment, in kNm?

  6. Question 6

A simply supported span of 15.0 m carries a moving load train. What is the peak ordinate of the influence line for bending moment at mid-span, in metres?
