Recognition of existing registration
If you are already registered or professionally qualified elsewhere, you may join the process at a different point.
Who this is for:Candidates at any stage
Existing professional registration can stand as evidence of IPD completion, and in some cases opens a recognition route instead of a full application. What applies depends on where you are registered.
Evidence of IPD completion that ICE accepts other than its own
Institution of Civil Engineers
- A Training Scheme A completion certificate in the civil or geotechnical discipline with the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE).
- Proof of current CEng or IEng registration through any Engineering Council licensed institution.
- Proof that you are eligible for CEng or IEng recognition under one of ICE's Mutual Recognition Agreements.
- Proof that you are currently a registered IntPE through another engineering body; a registered Professional Engineer with the Idaho State Board of Engineers, USA; or a Senior Engineer level 2 member with the Ordem dos Engenheiros, Portugal.
- Any such evidence must be certified as a true copy of the original, in the same way as educational qualifications.

Two different things
It is worth separating them, because candidates conflate them constantly.
Recognition as evidence of IPD completion means you do not need a Career Appraisal or a Training Agreement — but you still make a full Professional Review application and sit a review.
A recognition route to membership means ICE may admit you without a standard Professional Review at all, under a specific agreement. Which agreements are live, and what each covers, changes. ICE's guidance names erp@ice.org.uk as the contact, and asks for your CV and the details of your professional qualification.
The HKIE case is a useful example of how specific this gets: ICE's Career Appraisal guidance says that if you have completed HKIE Training Scheme A in the civil or geotechnical discipline and hold an academic qualification recognised as meeting the CEng educational base, you should apply directly for Chartered Professional Review.

They are different questions handled by different parts of ICE, and asking the wrong one costs weeks.
Is my registration current?
ICE's wording is about current registration. A lapsed registration is a different conversation.
Do I have certified copies?
Any evidence you provide must be certified as a true copy of the original, in the same way as educational qualifications.
