Phase 6 · Prepare for the review

Communication Task practice

Fifty original practice tasks across both levels, with a learning mode and a genuinely closed-book timed simulation.

Who this is for:Candidates at any stage

Original practice tasks built on the current themes and response formats — twenty at IEng level and thirty at CEng level, in two modes.

51 original practice tasks

Choose your level and, if you want, a theme and a format. Then let the tool set you one — being handed a scenario you did not choose is closer to the real thing.

The real task is closed book

No internet, AI tools, search engines, contacting anyone or other devices — only two sides of A4 you prepared, which you may refer to but not copy from. Queensferry may not be used during the real task. Closed-book simulation here withholds all help once you start, because practising with help is not practising.

The two modes

Learning mode is for the first several attempts. You get audience prompts, a suggested structure for the format you have been given, planning help, and feedback afterwards on what a strong response to that task would contain. Take as long as you like.

Closed-book simulation is the real thing. The timer runs at 60 or 90 minutes depending on your level, there are no hints once you start, nothing is suggested, and feedback appears only when you finish. You are trusted to keep it honest — the tool cannot see your other tabs, and there is no point in cheating a practice.

Practising the physical arrangement too

Worth doing at least once, because it is where avoidable problems live: write to time in the word processor you will actually use, with only the permitted windows open, produce the PDF at the end, and see how long that takes. Candidates who have never exported a PDF under time pressure find out on the day that it takes longer than they thought.

If you are sitting online, also check the setting: what is behind you when background effects are switched off, whether your video holds for ninety minutes, and whether the room is genuinely free of interruption.
