Career Appraisal — assembling the submission
Everything that goes in, the format ICE requires, and the limits that get an application returned unassessed.
Who this is for:Candidates at any stage
The Career Appraisal is submitted as a single self-contained PDF. Applications that exceed the limits are rejected and returned for editing, which can push you past the next assessment deadline.
What the submission contains
Institution of Civil Engineers
- A Career Appraisal application form.
- If you are not already a member, certified evidence that you have the required qualifications.
- A cover page.
- A two-page CV showing professional development progression, the size and financial value of projects, and your role and responsibilities in each.
- A report demonstrating your experience against the attributes at IEng MICE or CEng MICE.
- Appendices.
- Continuing professional development — a development action plan and a personal development record.
- A non-refundable fee, paid online before you send the documents.
- If your experience is in infrastructure engineering, a 200-word statement of your specialism so ICE can appoint appropriate assessors.

- 5000wordsAt either IEng MICE or CEng MICE level.
- CV length
- 2pagesOutside the report word count.

- 12sides of A4CPD records sit outside this limit.
- Application file size
- 15MB, one PDFA single PDF. Convert documents to PDF electronically rather than scanning where you can, and check it reads in black and white.
- Career Appraisal filename format
- membership number, initials, surnameICE gives the pattern 62200093_J.B.BLOGGS. Submissions exceeding the format or size limits are returned for editing.
- CPD expected
- 30hours of effective learning per yearWhere you have less, ICE expects a robust explanation in the submission and expects you to show how competence has been maintained.
- Personal development record — all other applicants
- 3years minimum, back from the application date
- Health, safety and welfare training
- current formal training must appear in the recordStated for both Professional Review and Career Appraisal CPD records. It is one of the most common gaps.
