What this area is really asking
That sustainability changed what you actually did, and that you can talk about the whole life of what you built, not just its construction.
Where Chartered differs
The CEng extension asks for a professional and responsible role in reducing resource demand across the whole life cycle. ICE frames the Climate Emergency as central to civil engineering and uses the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the framework, including where a project's impact on them is negative. Being able to name the harm your project does, as well as the good, reads as maturity rather than disloyalty.
What strong and weak evidence look like
Worth doing
- A quantity you reduced — concrete, steel, excavation, imported fill — and the design decision that reduced it.
- A carbon comparison you carried out, with the assumptions you had to make and how much they mattered.
- A whole-life argument that beat a lower capital cost, or one that lost and why.
- Reuse of an existing asset instead of replacement, and the assessment that made it defensible.
- An honest account of a project's negative impact and what was done to limit it.
- Adaptation as well as mitigation: designing for the climate the asset will live in.
Avoid
- Listing the UN goals a project touches, with no decision attached.
- Sustainability described entirely as recycling site waste.
- The project's sustainability strategy quoted as your evidence.
- "We used low-carbon concrete" without the comparison that justified it.
- Claiming carbon savings with no idea of the baseline.

Weaker
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the design and we specified low-carbon concrete in line with the client's net zero commitments.
Stronger
The default was full removal and replacement of a 3,200 m² slab. I ran a comparison: replacement was roughly 310 tCO₂e including disposal and new concrete; an overlay on the sound two-thirds with local replacement of the failed bays came out around 120 tCO₂e. The overlay raised the finished level by 90 mm, which mattered at two door thresholds, and I had to check the additional load on the piles. It went ahead. The number I am least sure of is the disposal factor — it dominated the difference, and I would want better data before I quoted the saving as precisely as that.
Why — There is a baseline, a comparison, a real constraint the candidate had to resolve, and an honest statement about which assumption the answer was sensitive to. That last part reads as competence, not weakness.

What did I do differently because of sustainability?
If the answer is nothing, the evidence is not there yet — and that is worth knowing early.
What is the biggest source of carbon in what I designed or built?
Reviewers often start here. Not knowing suggests the analysis was somebody else's.
What happens to this asset in fifty years?
Whole-life thinking is explicit in the CEng extension.
Where did my project make things worse?
ICE asks members to consider negative impacts as well as positive ones. Candidates who only claim benefit sound unconsidered.

Weaker
The scheme delivered significant environmental benefits and contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goals 11 and 13.
Stronger
The hard defence protected 340 properties, and it also cut off a stretch of intertidal habitat that will not come back. We offset part of it with managed realignment upstream, but the honest position is that the offset is smaller than the loss and it will take fifteen years to establish. I argued for the realignment area being extended, and lost, because of land acquisition cost. I record it because the alternative — writing this up as a straightforward environmental win — would not be true.
Why — ICE asks members to consider the impact of their work on the UN goals throughout the project life cycle, including where it is negative. A candidate who can describe the harm as well as the benefit reads as someone who has actually thought about it.
