Incorporated Engineer — IEng MICE
What Incorporated registration represents, the responsibility it describes, and what reviewers are actually looking for.

Incorporated Engineer is a full professional registration. It describes an engineer who maintains and manages applications of current and developing technology, and who exercises independent judgement in doing so.
Some of the language used around IEng in the industry is unhelpful, and some of it is simply wrong. The common version — that Incorporated Engineers follow procedures while Chartered Engineers think — does not survive contact with the actual attribute statements. Look at what an Incorporated Professional Review assesses: solving engineering problems using a sound theoretical approach, managing teams, managing budgets, managing risk, and exercising sound independent engineering judgement. That last statement appears at both levels, word for word.
What distinguishes the two is not whether you think, but the scope of what you are responsible for defining. That distinction is set out honestly on Chartered Engineer and in the attribute library.
What an Incorporated Professional Review assesses
Institution of Civil Engineers
- The same seven areas as a Chartered Professional Review: understanding and practical application of engineering; management and leadership; commercial ability; health, safety and welfare; sustainable development; interpersonal skills and communication; professional commitment.
- A successful IPR or IIPR allows registration as a Member and as an Incorporated Engineer, with the postnominals IEng MICE.
- Both reviewers must agree that you have met all the attributes at Incorporated level.
- Presentation and interview together — IEng level
- 60minutes maximum
- Communication Task — IEng level
- 60minutesTwo questions set, one answered. The response is a straightforward document such as a technical memo or note.
- Professional Review report length
- 5000words of body textBody text only. Contents pages, tables of figures, lists of abbreviations, appendices, the CV and CPD records are outside the count.

What suitable responsibility looks like
Reviewers are looking for work that was genuinely yours to get right, in situations where the answer was not simply handed to you. That happens across every part of the industry.

Illustrative, not a checklist. The common thread is a defined responsibility with real consequences.

Weaker
I was involved in the drainage works on the A-road scheme. The team designed and installed a new outfall and the works were completed on programme and to budget.
Stronger
I was responsible for the outfall installation. The ground conditions differed from the ground investigation — we found made ground 1.2 m higher than expected — and I had to decide whether to continue with the battered excavation or move to a shored solution. I recalculated the required batter, concluded it would have taken the excavation into the verge and the buried services, and recommended trench boxes. That added two days and around £6,000, which I set out for the project manager with the alternative costs. It removed the risk of a collapse next to a live carriageway.
Why — The second version has a person in it. It names a decision, the information behind it, the option rejected, the cost of the choice and the reason it was worth paying. None of that required a bigger project — only a clearer account of what the writer actually did.
Common misunderstandings
Worth doing
- Treat IEng as the registration you are applying for, and evidence it fully.
- Show independent judgement — it is explicitly assessed at this level.
- Show commercial responsibility. Candidates often under-evidence this because they assume it is a Chartered-only requirement. It is not.
- Show that you understand the construction process, and expect site experience to be relevant to that.
Avoid
- Describe IEng as 'not quite Chartered'. Reviewers are assessing an Incorporated standard, and apologising for it undermines your own evidence.
- Assume management and leadership can be skipped. Managing teams or technical specialisms is an Incorporated statement.
- Leave sustainability to a paragraph at the end. It is one of the seven areas and carries the same weight as the others.
- Assume a job title decides the level. Reviewers assess what you did.
