A framework for any ground

The sequence of questions that turns a ground profile into understanding.

Why this matters

Faced with an unfamiliar borehole log and a new project, an experienced engineer does not reach for a formula — they ask a sequence of questions in a reliable order, each building on the last. This module assembles the course into that sequence, so that any ground, however unfamiliar, can be read methodically.

What you should already know

  • All earlier modules — this lesson connects them
  • Especially effective stress (M8), drainage/paths (M9), consolidation (M10) and strength (M11)

Read any ground in this order:

  1. 1.What is it? Describe and classify each stratum — grading, plasticity, density/consistency (Modules 2, 4, 5). This sets expectations for everything else.
  2. 2.Where is the water? Establish the groundwater regime and whether it is steady or seeping (Modules 3, 7, 14). Water controls effective stress.
  3. 3.What is the effective stress? Build the σ, u, σ′ profile, including any surcharge or seepage (Module 8). Effective stress governs stiffness and strength.
  4. 4.Does it drain, and over what time? Decide, from permeability and loading rate, whether the critical case is short-term (undrained) or long-term (drained) — and remember loading and unloading differ (Modules 9, 11).
  5. 5.Is it strong enough? Check strength for the governing drainage case: (short term) or , (long term), against the demand (Module 11).
  6. 6.Will it move too much? Estimate deformation — immediate, consolidation settlement and its rate, or swelling (Modules 10, 2).

The answers, together, are the ground model and its implications.
