Soil fabric and structure
How particles are arranged, and why that makes natural soil anisotropic and disturbance-sensitive.
Why this matters
Two soils with the same grains and the same water content can behave completely differently because the grains are arranged differently. Fabric — the geometric arrangement of particles and the bonds between them — is as important as what the particles are made of, and it is the first casualty of poor sampling.
Fabric is the arrangement of particles and voids; structure adds the effect of bonding and stress history. For coarse soils, fabric is mostly about packing density — loose or dense (Module 5, Module 11). For clays it is richer:
- A flocculated fabric, formed in salt water, has plates meeting edge-to-face in an open, card-house arrangement — more open, more permeable, often more sensitive.
- A dispersed fabric, formed in fresh water or after remoulding, has plates lying parallel — denser and less permeable.
Natural deposits are rarely uniform: they are layered, with thin partings of sand or silt in clay, and often fissured — networks of hairline cracks that dominate mass permeability and strength far more than the intact material between them.
Because deposition builds soil layer by layer under gravity, natural soil is almost always anisotropic — stiffer and stronger vertically than horizontally, and much more permeable along the bedding than across it (Module 7's layered permeability). An engineer who treats natural ground as uniform and isotropic is ignoring its fabric.
